Coco

I am the most laid back among my literary friends when it comes to keeping up with the latest movies, books or music. I am always the last one to know. Sometimes, I do it purposely to get reviews from my lit friends so that I don’t spend my time browsing and indulge myself only in the best work out there.

One such movie that I watched only after careful hearing from my own reviewers was Coco. (Yes, I watched Coco at home and missed it while it was in theatres) Just like everyone else, I, too, ended up shedding a tear or three. All my friends who had adorned the role of movie critics for me had told me about how the movie emphasizes staying together and the value of having a family and it certainly does! However, the most beautiful concept in the movie that struck me was how we all live in each other’s memories.

In the movie, people in the afterlife world vanish forever once they are completely forgotten in the living world. The thought struck me like a lightning. We all live only in each other’s memories. When we move from one particular phase to another in life, all we have left is our memories. Some might argue that you can always store the souvenirs, but the fact that these things have memories attached to them is what makes them special.

Our thoughts make up our world and we live in each other’s thoughts. Social media sensation and former monk, Jay Shetty says, “I am what I think you think I am”. The phrase emphasizes the fact that we live in our thoughts and each other’s thoughts. If our thoughts vanish, so will our memories and once our memories are forgotten, you know what happens. If you don’t then get into your pyjamas, grab your favourite snack and watch Coco, this Saturday.
