Brooklyn Nine Nine — An Ode to Jake Peralta
Hi Jake Peralta,
When my closest friends started saying ‘Cool’ more than once and more than it was required, I came to know about their adoration for Brooklyn Nine Nine. And that’s precisely how my love affair with the show and your world began. My first memory of you is when you were annoying as hell to Amy and being an alpha in your relationship with Charles. I am not a fan of the boyish charm that you exuded nor will I ever fall for a prankster like you. To say the least, I wasn’t fond of you at all.
But your evolution as a person has made me believe that there’s more to people than their first impressions. There’s more depth to a person than what appears on the surface. As you began to uncover your true self and in the process revealed an honest person beneath your wide grin.
My view of the world grew as you grew as a person. Unlike most of us, you didn’t have a normal childhood. You weren’t raised to see the hope and happiness in the world. But every time you held on to a person and took the first step to make someone’s life better, we learnt that we don’t need to see the light at the end of the tunnel to make someone’s life brighter. Every time you refused to give up on people whether it was Sophia, Amy or Charles, you taught us that the pain and hurt from our past lives doesn’t become our excuse to be a cynic.
You showed us that we all our imperfect to certain degrees. You weren’t the ideal man but your efforts to become one are commendable to say the least. The way you have evolved as a person has made me believe that there’s hope in the world, in the most unlikeliest of places.
I am not going to applaud you for being there for Amy and supporting her in her every career move because every woman deserves that from her husband. However, I will heartily appreciate you for every effort you make, every time you admit your mistake and every time you are ready to work on yourself.
Thank you for teaching us that we don’t have to be a superhero to inspire others and that sometimes our constant efforts to become a better person also serves this world to become a better place.
Yours,
A fan turned admirer
